Memory Verse Monday – Weeks 1 & 2

If a person’s blog isn’t a true testimony to their personality, then I don’t know what is.  I LOVE categories and schedules.  I’m not rigid about them, obviously, but I love the underlying structure and foundation they provide.  So, in celebration of who I am, I am adding another category to this blog.  I am personally about to start week three of a Bible memory verse plan.  As I have been reciting week 2 in my head, I couldn’t shake the thought that several other people might want to join me in this venture.

Some popular verses about God’s Word are:

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16)

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.  (Said by David in Psalm 119:11)

I believe that scripture memory is important because when we are going through something, good or bad, God can bring a verse to our heads and speak to us about the situation.  When we don’t know scripture, He will still speak to us, but it is through our own thoughts, so sometimes what he is saying can get muddled with our actual own thoughts.  If we know His word, then His words fill our heads and crowd out our own thoughts, which is always the absolute best case scenario.

I am using a book called Bible Memory Plan: 52 Verses You Should --and CAN—Know.  This book gives a different verse each week and then gives tips and encouragement for memorizing.  This book is $1.99 on Amazon in both the paperback and Kindle versions.  I recommend buying it.  I don’t want to just plagiarize, so I will only use the verse of the week and I will always refer you back to their book.

I am starting week 3 today, so for the next 2 weeks I encourage you to catch up by memorizing 2 verses this week and 2 verses next week, and then we can proceed from there.  I am going to try to be really diligent with posting these.  My blog software allows me to post date stuff, so I will try to do weeks at a time so that you will always have a new verse on Monday mornings.

Also, the one thing I will say that book recommends is choosing one version of the Bible and sticking with it so that there is no confusion when you are searching your Bible for things.  This is good advise for someone just starting out in their Bible memory, but I am not so good at following this advise. My head is full of New American Standard and New International Version from Bible studies I’ve done in the past.  Plus, sometimes the wording of one version is just easier to memorize than the wording of another. I think it’s more important that I can recall a verse at all than worrying about which version it is.  However, for consistency's sake I will always post the New International Version (even though New American is my secret favorite version).

Week 1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

Week 2

I can do all this through Him who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 (NIV)

Post them on your mirror, make them your screen savers, say them out loud in the car until you get them down.  Happy memorizing.

  1. That's so great you're memorizing verses! I want to start, too. But I don't think I'll be following along with you. I am not quite ready to jump into it yet. Terrible, but true. good luck!
