At Least My Birthday Ended Well…

My birthday was December 16.  I was looking forward to this birthday more than most because it was going to be the first time since Jason and I had met that I would get to be with him on my birthday.  (The first year he was in Guam with the military, the second, third and fourth year, I was at flight attendant training in another states.)So, he had a big night planned for us.  Were were going to dinner at Mickey Mantles Steakhouse in Bricktown and then to the Civic Center to watch the play Oliver, by Charles Dickens.

The weekend before my birthday Jason and I were driving to Dallas for our annual “We’re Getting Old Party" when my car broke down in Denton.  (I was thanking God that it hadn’t happened hours before on my way home from Bartlesville.)  My mom came and picked us up and the next day we had the car towed to the closest Saturn certified mechanic, which was in Lewisville.  Dad gave us his car to drive home for the week.  I returned the night before my birthday to pick up my Saturn.  Shane was off work, so he came with me.  We picked up my car and headed to my gramma’s house in Denison.  We were just going to stop by on our way home, but as we left my gramma’s house the check engine light came on.  I called Jason and asked what it could be.  He told me to pull over and check all the fluids.  When I opened the hood he asked me how the belt looked.  I said, “what belt?”  Turns out the belt was gone, which is the reason it had to be towed to the shop in the first place.  Jason called the mechanic who put us in touch with a mechanic in Denison.  Shane and I were on the side of the road for an hour waiting for the tow truck to arrive. Shane needed to get to work and I was needing to get home for my big date.  Once again, my parents came to the rescue.  They drove two cars and sat with us while we waited to see about the problem.  The shop was taking too long to figure it out, so dad’s once again handed over his car and Shane and I headed back to Norman.

Once home I had 40 minutes to shower and get ready.  Jason had made reservations for dinner and then we had our play to attend.  Frantic, I hurried to get ready.  I put my make-up on in the car while Jason drove.  He called the restaurant to let them know we were running late.  Then, as we arrived at the host stand Jason’s phone rang.  He answered even though he didn’t recognize the number.  It was the Civic Center calling to tell us that the play had been canceled due to several cast members having the flu.  I didn’t know whether or not to laugh or cry, this was the icing on the cake to my already OUSTANDING DAY.

However, being the awesome guy that he is, Jason saved the day.  I was dying to see the movie Burlesque.  So, because it was my birthday Jason suggested we go.  We looked up show times during dinner and then hurried through it.  This is us leaving the restaurant.

Not surprisingly, given my day, there was a wreck on I-35 and traffic was crawling.  If you are from OKC, then you understand that this does not happen.  At 7:30 on a Thursday night you can get anywhere very quickly.  We pulled off the highway and took the back roads to Moore.  We arrived at the Warren, but not before the movie started.  None-the-less, the movie was incredible!  As soon as it was over I asked Jason if we could watch it again.

He said, “Sure, we’ll buy it when it comes out on DVD.”

I said, “No, I mean, can we watch it again tonight?”

“Are you serious?”

In a mousy voice, batting my puppy dog eyes, I said, “Yes, please.”

“Oh, my gosh.”

I continued batting my eyes.

“I guess.”

I squeezed the bicep I was hugging. “Yay! Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

So, we bought two more tickets for the late showing.  It was scheduled to start at 10:10 PM.  We had 30 minutes to spare.  We spent it playing Big Buck Hunter, which was a blast in and of itself.

We were having so much fun playing that we were almost late to the second showing.

Just like that, what started out as one of the most stressful birthdays of my life turned into one of the most fun.  Thank you honey, for such an amazing birthday.
