Do You Know God?

Jesus says in John 14:5-7, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Therefore, if you do not know Jesus, you do not know God. Before Jesus, God dealt with people in the Old Testament through His Spirit. Since Jesus, we know God through Jesus.

In Matthew 7 Jesus warns us of people who claim to know Him but do not. Are you one of those people?

In Matthew 7:16 Jesus says that we will know them (Christ followers) by their fruit. Once we recognize our need for Jesus and give our lives to Him then His Spirit lives in us. Galatians 5:21-23 tells us that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control.

So, when Jesus says that you will know them by their fruits, He is saying that we can know whether or not we know (have relationship with) Him by the “fruit” we are producing in our lives. When I am walking with God (I seek His will above my own) then my first response to everything comes from His Spirit within me. When I encounter something frustrating my first response is love and patience. When I encounter disappointment my first response is joy and peace. When someone lashes out at me my first response is kindness and gentleness. This is how I know that I know God. His Spirit flows through me and the world sees it without me having to do anything.
A lot of people think that Christians are “fake”. True Christians (those who have made Jesus Savior and Lord) are not fake. The reason they might seem fake is because they respond to people and situations in a way that seems unnatural to those who are not Christians. What non-Christians (anyone who has not actively given their whole life to Christ’s authority) don’t understand is that the seeming unnatural responses are actually the most natural responses for those who have Christ’s Spirit in them. That is how you will know them, by their fruit.
If you are unsure whether or not you know God then look at your life. Are you responses to tough situations the natural human responses, or they Spirit responses?
