I Know That I Know God. Now What?

Knowing God is not without its price. Jesus paid the ultimate price, which is death and complete separation from God. However, following Him is not “free” (although people like to say that it is). In my opinion, this is the crux of the matter.

This is Jesus talking in Luke 9:22-27

"The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day. And He was saying to them all, if anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits himself (NLT says “soul”)? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God."

I know this passage is long, and it might be confusing, but what it is basically saying is that you must actually give your whole being and your whole life to God. When you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, then you are also committing your life to Him because in that moment your heart is changed. (With the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness. Romans 10:10)

Jesus commands that we DENY ourselves and TAKE-UP our cross DAILY and follow Him. Denying ourselves means we give over our control of our careers, our families, our friends, our schedules and our dreams. Taking up our cross means that we accept what He has for us instead. We are to do this daily. Every morning when we wake up we are to say, “Lord, this day is Yours, please do as You see fit. I’m just along for the ride.”

The passage from Luke 9 also warns that if we deny Jesus, then He will deny us before His Father.  Once we commit our lives to Him, we are to live out our knew found freedom.  We are to tell others about Him through the way we live our lives.

And lastly, did you catch the last part of the passage above? “But I say truthfully, there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” There are some opinions that believe Jesus is referring to the transfiguration (Luke 9:28+).  I hope they are correct because to me it sounds like there are a lot of people who will live their lives saying that they know God, but when they face judgment they will realize that they really only knew about God.  Don’t be that person.  Make the decision to know God through Jesus Christ.

And you once again you ask the question, WHY DO I WANT TO KNOW GOD?

It’s because of Romans 10:11, “WHOEVER BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."

At this point it is important that you find a good church.  It is also important that you start reading your Bible regularly.  This is the only way to learn about your God.  I would recommend starting with the book of John in the New Testament.  After that read Galations and Ephesians.  From there you should have a pastor you can ask what to read next.  It is crucial that you find a church.  I write a post about this here.
